The Fiat 500 is our specialist car: three metres, sixty-nine tiny naturally aspirated horsepower, and a turning circle of 9.3 metres that goes exactly where a bigger hatchback cannot, the tight bays around the Kasbah in Tanger, the ochre courtyards near Tetouan's medina, the two-and-a-half-metre alley to a Chefchaouen riad's parking spot. It is a two-plus-two: four seats on paper, comfortable for two adults with cabin luggage. The single-clutch automated manual (branded Dualogic on this generation) needs a light foot but is smooth once you learn it. Fuel economy is our fleet's best on paper at around 4.7 L/100 km petrol, and, importantly, the 500 sits at insurance category C, our lowest. Not the right car for the coastal run to Al Hoceima; the right car for a photographer who wants to move slowly through the medinas.

The 500 is homologated as a 4-seat vehicle and has ISOFIX on the rear seats, but the rear legroom (approximately 65 cm) is not designed for adult passengers on runs longer than 20 minutes.
